Printer problems are one of the most common tech frustrations. Before you give up, work through these simple checks in order.
Key points
- Restart the printer, computer, and router.
- Make sure everything is on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Clear any stuck print jobs.
- Remove and add the printer again if needed.
Start with a restart
Turn off the printer and your computer — and your router too if other devices are also having trouble. Turn the router on first, then the printer, then the computer.
Check the network
A printer that says "offline" has often lost its Wi-Fi connection or joined a different network. Use the printer's screen or settings to confirm it is on the same network as your computer. A new router or a changed Wi-Fi password is a common cause.
Clear the print queue
- Open your computer's printer settings and cancel any stuck jobs.
- Make sure the correct printer is set as the default.
- Check that you aren't printing to an old copy of the printer.
Remove and add the printer again
Removing the printer from your computer and adding it back often fixes driver and connection problems. Download the latest software from the manufacturer's website rather than using an old disc.
