If your Wi-Fi is weak in parts of your home, you may be wondering whether you need a better router or a mesh system. Here is how the options differ.

Key points

  • A single router suits smaller, open homes.
  • Mesh spreads coverage with several units.
  • Extenders are a budget option with trade-offs.
  • A wired connection between mesh units makes them even stronger.

A single router

One device broadcasts Wi-Fi from one spot. In apartments and smaller homes, a good router in a central, open location is often all you need.

Mesh Wi-Fi

A mesh system uses a main unit plus one or more satellites placed around the home. They work together as one network with one name, and your devices switch between them automatically. Mesh is a good fit for multi-storey homes, long layouts, and homes with thick walls.

What about extenders?

An extender repeats your existing signal to help one weak area. Extenders are inexpensive, but they can reduce speeds and sometimes create a separate network name. Mesh is usually the smoother long-term option.

Questions to ask

  • How big is your home, and how many floors does it have?
  • Where does your internet line come in?
  • Are there network ports in other rooms you could use?
  • How many devices are online at the same time?

Not sure which option fits your home? We can recommend and set up the right network.
